Rare 1850s handmade tortoise shell Carnet de Bal, created and signed by the celebrated (and award winning) luxury goods makers Alphonse Giroux.

The outside is in tortoise shell with a hand carved gold Monogram at center which spells M B.

The inside is exquisitely lined in a delicious cream Moire taffeta silk with two pockets for 'calling cards' and a central bone page which has traces of the owners dance card names marked in pencil. Among them 'Tolsch'; 'Bubatan' 'Anthony' Vidal'; 'Baronnet'.

The silk has a gold signature for Alphonse Giroux et Cie, Boulevard des Capucines, Paris.

Alphonse Giroux (1775/761848) was a celebrated 'tabletier', or dealer in luxury goods, and was known for its high-quality objects such as glove boxes, caskets for weddings and baptisms, gifts for the New Year, and small pieces of furniture in a variety of styles. King Louis XVIII, the King Charles X would buy their gifts from the house of Giroux for les Enfants de France .

This dance card is in antique condition, given the fine materials and the age of this item it is not in perfect unused condition.

Please take a close look at the photographs. There is a crack to the delicate shell exterior but it still very much remains intact (it opens and closes perfectly). there is a fissure to the internal bone page but again it turns perfectly.

The moire taffeta has signs of age with what looks like water stains.

The dance card measures 10cm in width & 7cm in height and depth of 1.3cm.
